Why Minneriya?

One of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles

Every dry season, as the waters of the 1,700-year-old Minneriya tank retreat, fresh grass sprouts on the exposed lakebed and wild Asian elephants walk out of the forest to feed on it — often in their hundreds. It is known simply as The Gathering, and it is one of the largest regular congregations of Asian elephants anywhere.

Minneriya is also perfectly placed. Habarana is 15 minutes away, Sigiriya under an hour, and Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and the forest monastery of Ritigala all make easy half days. If Minneriya is quiet, the sister parks of Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park are next door — so a safari here rarely ends without elephants.

Visiting Minneriya: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to see The Gathering at Minneriya?

The Gathering builds through the dry season and usually peaks from about July to October, with August and September often the strongest months. It depends on rainfall and water levels, so it shifts a little every year. See our month-by-month guide.

Is a morning or afternoon safari better at Minneriya?

For The Gathering, the afternoon (roughly 14:30 until the park closes around 18:00) is usually best, because herds come out of the forest onto the grassland in the late afternoon. Mornings are cooler, quieter and better for birds, but elephants are often still in the trees.

How much does a Minneriya safari cost?

You pay for the jeep and for park entry. Bookable half-day safaris start from around US$10–30 per person depending on group size; park fees for foreign visitors are roughly US$25–35 per adult including taxes and are sometimes extra. Check what is included before you book — see our ranked list.

What if there are no elephants in Minneriya that day?

Good drivers switch to Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, because the same herds move between the parks depending on water and grazing. That flexibility is why most safaris from Habarana and Sigiriya are sold as “Minneriya, Kaudulla or Eco Park”. Read which park when.

Where should I stay for a Minneriya safari?

Habarana is closest (about 15 minutes to the main gate). Sigiriya is 40–50 minutes away and lets you combine the Lion Rock with an afternoon safari. Giritale sits on the Polonnaruwa side of the park. Compare them on our where to stay page.
