Where to Stay for Minneriya

Sleep close to the parks and your jeep picks you up at the door. Here is where to stay.

There are no hotels inside Minneriya National Park, and you don’t need one: the main gate is a 15-minute drive from Habarana, and safari jeeps collect guests from hotels all around the area.

There are three good bases. Habarana is the closest and most central for all three elephant parks. Sigiriya is 40–50 minutes away but lets you climb the Lion Rock at dawn and go on safari in the afternoon, and has the widest choice. Giritale, on the lake of the same name, sits on the Polonnaruwa side of the park and is ideal if the ancient city is on your list too.

Guest scores are Trip.com’s (out of 5); where shown, rates are indicative starting prices per room per night in US dollars and change constantly with season and demand — every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

Booking tips

  • In August and September, the peak of The Gathering, the best-located hotels fill up — book several weeks ahead.
  • Ask your hotel to arrange the jeep: drivers collect you from the door and know which park is best that week.
  • Many resorts are outside the towns; check the distance to the park gate before you book.
  • Air conditioning is essential most of the year, and a pool is worth paying for in the hot months.

Once your bed is sorted, pick your safari: our ranked safari comparison covers the jeeps and combos worth booking.

Simple homestays start from around US$15–25 a night; good mid-range resorts are roughly US$80–130; top nature hotels such as Vil Uyana cost several hundred dollars in high season.

Do hotels arrange safaris?

Almost all do. They book a licensed jeep that collects you at the hotel — or you can reserve a well-reviewed safari online with hotel pickup included.
