An open safari jeep on the grass at Minneriya with a herd of elephants in the background

Minneriya Safaris & Tours

Every sensible way to see the elephants of Minneriya — compared, priced and bookable in a couple of taps.

A Minneriya safari is simple: an open-top 4×4 jeep, a driver who knows where the herds are, and around three hours inside the park. What differs is where you are picked up, whether the jeep is private or shared, whether park tickets are included — and whether you want to combine it with Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa.

Everything here is booked through GetYourGuide: live availability, hotel pickup on most, free cancellation on many and reserve-now-pay-later on some. Prices are indicative "from" starting points in US dollars and change with season and group size — tap any card for the live price in your own currency. Park entrance fees for foreigners are sometimes included and sometimes paid at the gate; each listing spells it out.

Pick by what you want

Just the elephants — a half-day jeep safari

The core experience. Pickup from Habarana, Sigiriya or Dambulla, about three hours in the park, back for dinner. Choose private for flexibility, shared for price.

Booking questions

Frequently asked questions

Private or shared jeep?

A private jeep lets you stay with a herd as long as you like and leave when you want; shared safaris are cheaper and fine for most people. At the height of The Gathering, when many jeeps are in the park, private is worth the small premium.

Are park entrance fees included?

Sometimes. Cheaper listings often exclude them — foreign adults then pay roughly US$25–35 each at the gate, in rupees, including taxes. Listings marked “entrance ticket included”, such as the Hurulu Eco Park safari, save you the admin. Always check the “includes” section.

Which park will my safari visit?

Many safaris are sold as Minneriya but switch to Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park on the day if the herds have moved. That is a good sign: it means your driver is following the elephants, not a schedule.

What time do safaris start?

Afternoon safaris usually leave Habarana around 14:00–14:30 (earlier from Sigiriya) and return around sunset. Morning safaris start at or before the 06:00 opening. Your operator confirms the pickup time.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Most listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and many let you reserve now and pay later. The exact terms are shown on each tour page before you confirm.
