Minneriya National Park

Home of The Gathering

Minneriya National Park covers 8,889 hectares of dry-zone forest, scrub and grassland in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, wrapped around the ancient Minneriya tank. It was first protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938 and declared a national park on 12 August 1997, mainly to safeguard the catchment of the reservoir and the elephants that depend on it. Today it forms part of a much larger network of protected forest — with Kaudulla, Hurulu and the Minneriya–Giritale Nature Reserve — that lets elephants move freely across the region.

The park is famous for The Gathering. As the dry season progresses, the tank shrinks and exposes a broad belt of fertile lakebed that turns into fresh grassland. Elephants from the surrounding forests converge on it to feed, bathe and socialise, and on the best afternoons, usually between about July and October, you can see well over a hundred elephants at once — family groups with tiny calves, young males sparring and big tuskers drifting between herds. It is one of the largest regular gatherings of Asian elephants in the world.

Top things to do at Minneriya National Park

See The Gathering on an afternoon safari

The classic Minneriya experience: an open jeep from Habarana or Sigiriya, entering the park around mid-afternoon and heading for the grasslands on the tank shore as the herds come out of the forest. Stay until the light turns gold — many of the best moments come in the last hour before closing.

Take a quieter morning drive

Morning safaris from 06:00 are cooler and calmer, with fewer jeeps and excellent birdlife. Elephants are less predictable in the morning, so treat it as a second safari rather than your only one in peak season.

Watch the birds on the tank

Minneriya is an Important Bird Area. Look for painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, lesser adjutants, cormorants, egrets and fishing eagles around the water, and bee-eaters, junglefowl and hornbills in the woodland.

Look out for the other mammals

Toque macaques and grey langurs gather near the entrance, spotted deer and sambar graze with the elephants, and mugger crocodiles bask on the banks. Leopards and sloth bears are present but rarely seen.

  • From Sigiriya or Dambulla: 40–60 minutes by road; most safaris include hotel pickup. Compare them on our best safaris page.

Insider tips

  • In peak season, book an afternoon safari — that is when The Gathering happens.
  • Park fees for foreigners are roughly US$25–35 per adult including taxes and are charged per person plus a vehicle fee; check whether your safari includes them.
  • Ask your driver to keep a respectful distance, switch off the engine near herds and never block their path to water.
  • Bring binoculars, a hat, sunscreen and a scarf for the dust; the drive back after sunset can feel cool.
  • If the herds have moved, trust your driver’s suggestion to switch to Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park.
