Minneriya National Park lies in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, on the A11 highway between Habarana and Polonnaruwa. The main entrance and ticket office are at Ambagaswewa, roughly 15 minutes’ drive east of Habarana junction. Nobody drives their own car into the park: you get to a nearby hotel or to the gate, and a licensed safari jeep takes it from there.
So “getting to Minneriya” really means getting to a base — usually Habarana, Sigiriya or Giritale — and letting a jeep pick you up. Colombo is roughly 180 km away, Kandy a little over 100 km, Sigiriya around 30 km.
The options, compared
| How | Time from Colombo | Indicative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car with driver / taxi | 4–5 h | ≈US$70–110 one way | Comfort, families, flexible stops |
| Intercity bus to Habarana | 5–6 h | Low — check fares at the stand | Budget travellers |
| Train to Habarana | 5–7 h | Cheap, few departures | Rail fans with time to spare |
| Day trip with safari | 4–5 h each way | from ≈US$36 | One free day, no planning |
1. Car with driver — the way most visitors travel
Sri Lanka is built for hiring a car with a driver: roads are slow, self-driving is hard work and drivers are reasonably priced. From Colombo or Bandaranaike International Airport to Habarana or Sigiriya, expect roughly 4–5 hours and US$70–110 one way depending on the vehicle and season. The Central Expressway now speeds up the first stretch out of Colombo. Many visitors keep the same driver for several days, and the driver can drop you at the safari jeep office or your hotel.
2. Bus — cheap and easy to Habarana
Buses from Colombo towards Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa pass through Habarana junction, as do many services from Kandy and Dambulla. Air-conditioned intercity buses are faster and more comfortable than the red state buses. From Habarana a tuk-tuk to your guesthouse takes a few minutes — and almost every guesthouse can book a jeep that collects you at the door.
3. Train — scenic, slow and infrequent
Habarana has a railway station on the line from Colombo towards Trincomalee and Batticaloa, and the Batticaloa branch continues past Minneriya towards Polonnaruwa. There are only a few trains a day and the journey is slow, but it is a relaxed way to arrive if you enjoy rail travel. Check the current timetable with Sri Lanka Railways before planning around it.
4. Day trip with a safari
If you are based in Colombo, Negombo or Kandy and only have one day, a tour is the most efficient choice. From Colombo it is a very long day — often 14–16 hours — but the most popular tour combines Sigiriya, the Dambulla caves and an optional safari. See our ranked comparison.
Journey times to the Minneriya gate
- From Habarana: about 15 minutes by jeep or tuk-tuk along the A11.
- From Sigiriya: 40–50 minutes via Habarana — most safaris include hotel pickup.
- From Dambulla: around 1 hour.
- From Giritale or Polonnaruwa: 15–30 minutes from the east.
- From Kandy: roughly 3 hours by car.
- From Trincomalee: around 2–2.5 hours via the A6 — a good pairing with the east-coast beaches from May to September.
Getting around locally
Tuk-tuks are everywhere; agree the fare before you get in, or use a ride-hailing app where it works. For safaris, don’t hire a jeep from a random tout at the roadside — book through your hotel or a well-reviewed operator so you know the vehicle is licensed and the price includes what you think it does.
Before you fly: visas
Most visitors to Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. Apply only through the official government portal and be wary of look-alike sites that charge extra. Fee waivers for some nationalities have come and gone in recent years — check the current rules for your passport before travelling.
