Habarana

The safari junction

Habarana is a small town at the junction of the A6 (Dambulla–Trincomalee) and the A11 (towards Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura), surrounded by forest, paddy fields and its own lake. There is not much to it — a strip of shops, a railway station and a few restaurants — but its position is unbeatable: Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park are all within about half an hour, and Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Ritigala are close by.

Every afternoon, dozens of open safari jeeps gather in Habarana to collect guests from the hotels. That makes it the most practical base for a safari-focused stay, with everything from family homestays to large, green resorts beside the lake.

Base yourself for the parks

From Habarana you can do Minneriya one afternoon and Kaudulla or Hurulu the next, with minimal driving.

Take a village tour

Local operators offer village experiences around Habarana and neighbouring Hiriwadunna — a walk through paddy fields, a canoe or catamaran ride across a tank and a home-cooked lunch.

Walk by the lake at dusk

Habarana lake is at its best in the evening light. Many hotels back onto it; keep to paths and away from the water’s edge after dark.

Kaudulla National Park Half-Day Private Jeep Safari

The highest-rated safari on our list. Kaudulla lies just north of Minneriya around its own ancient tank, and as Minneriya dries out late in the season many herds move here. A private jeep lets you stay with the elephants as long as you like.

  • Kaudulla — quieter than Minneriya
  • Often the best park from September
