View from Pidurangala across the jungle to Sigiriya rock

Pidurangala Rock

The best view of Sigiriya

Pidurangala is Sigiriya’s older, quieter twin, a kilometre or so to the north. Monks lived in its caves long before Kashyapa built his palace, and a working temple still sits at its foot. Halfway up is a large brick reclining Buddha sheltered under a rock overhang.

Most people come for the summit: a broad granite dome with an unobstructed view across the forest to Sigiriya rock. At sunrise, with mist in the jungle, it is one of the great views in Sri Lanka — and the perfect way to start a day that ends with an elephant safari.

Climb for sunrise or sunset

The path takes 30–45 minutes: stone steps through forest, then a short scramble over boulders that requires using your hands. Bring a headtorch for a sunrise climb.

Visit the reclining Buddha

The brick reclining Buddha under the overhang is easy to miss in the dark — look for it on the way down.
