Dambulla Cave Temple

Sri Lanka’s greatest painted cave shrines

The Dambulla Cave Temple — Rangiri Dambulla Raja Maha Viharaya — is a series of five cave shrines tucked beneath an enormous granite overhang high above the plain. Tradition holds that King Valagamba sheltered here in the 1st century BCE and turned the caves into a temple when he regained his throne; later kings kept adding to it, and much of the painting dates from the Kandyan period of the 18th century.

The result is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka: more than 150 Buddha statues and around 2,100 square metres of murals covering walls and ceilings. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 and is still a living monastery. It lies about an hour west of Minneriya, on the way to or from Kandy.
